A naturally occuring knob of the American Whitethorn, a close relative of the Irish Greenbriar. Finished with acrylic.
The Whitethorn is a species of the Crataegus genus which is a member of the Rosaceae family (Rose). It is also known has Hawthorn or Hawthorn berry.
The shafts are made of 3/4" diameter steel pipe coated with epoxy and have a wood core. The shape is uneven simulating a "natural" stick. The finish of the stick is smooth and polished. The finished shafts go from the base of the head to just less than 1" in diameter at the tip.
As the Shillelagh heads come in all sizes, I've started picturing these heads with a Mendocino head for the purpose of making a size comparison.
"AN OLD IRISH DITTY"
Sure it's the same Old Shillelagh me father brought from Ireland And devil a man was prouder than he, as walked with it in his hand He'd lead the band on Paddy's day and twirl it 'round his mitt And devil a bit we'd laugh at it or dad would have a fit With that very same Shillelagh, he could lick a dozen men As fast as they'd get up, begory, he'd knock 'em down again And many's the time he used it on ME to make me understand
That very same Shilelagh he brought from Ireland
